Cleaning: A Choir Talk

I’ll be the first to admit, my housekeeping skills are sub par. I’ve tried many different schedules, but hadn’t been able to find something that worked in this current life stage, until now! I’ve been using this schedule for a few months now and my house is cleaner than it’s been since before I was pregnant with Sadie, granted, that doesn’t take too much!

Today, my plan is to walk you through my big cleaning day. For me, that’s Mondays. We usually get started around 9am, and I’m finished before 1. Let’s get started.

Start a load of laundry. Make a grocery list and head out for the week’s main shopping trip. Decide on a crock pot meal for dinner tonight! (this genius tip comes curtesy of Amanda!) It typically takes me about an hour to get to the store, shop, and get back home.

Now that you’re home, get all the cold food put away, but leave the rest. Get your crockpot going for supper, having a crockpot meal will become more important later:) Rotate the laundry and start Phase One.

Phase One: Clearing the Clutter

One important note, on this day, I only focus on the downstairs of our home; our living space, the kitchen, living room, and guest bath. Start by making piles of everything that doesn’t belong in these areas. I usually use the stairs, one stair for each room, but I know some people use baskets for this step. I usually let Sadie just sorta run around and play during this phase. She’s frequently in the kitchen pulling the groceries out of the bags, but I don’t mind because I’m able to get work done. Now that all the things that are out of place have been sorted, put the remaining items into their homes. It’s important not to get sidetracked during this step, focus on getting the items into their correct location only, don’t do anything else. Any dishes just get piled next to the sink. I put the rest of the groceries away and take the piles into their rooms. Continue rotating laundry as needed.

Now we move to Phase Two

Phase Two: Cleaning Top to Bottom

For this phase, I think it’s best to have the littles corralled somewhere. For us, this is around lunch time so I will make Sadie a quick plate lunch and put her in the high chair. If she finishes before I do, I give her some colors or playdough.  So go get your kids coralled, I’ll wait.

Let’s get started. By now, your house should be pretty tidy, and if you’re like me, that is motivation to finish up! Start with getting all the dishes into the dishwasher and hand washing anything else. While those dry, we are going to dust and wash the windows. Spray the guest toilet with bowl cleaner and let it set. Now go put the dishes away. Use all purpose cleaner to wipe down cabinet fronts and your appliances. After you’ve cleaned the stovetop, set your oven to clean. If you have a steam clean option use that, otherwise put a pan with a cup of water in at 250 for a bit. Every few weeks, run a self clean cycle (this is where the crockpot comes in handy since your oven will be off limits for a few hours as it cleans). The littles are probably finished eating by now, clean up that mess, put them down for nap, and wipe down the table. Use the all purpose cleaner on your countertops and sink, next.

Clean the toilet quickly. If you’ve steamed clean your oven carefully wipe out the inside. Sweep, wet mop, and vacuum floors. And tada! Put your feet up, enjoy your clean house, and knowing you don’t have to make dinner:)
